LUNAR ECLIPSES · LOOK AT THE STARS
Be there for
the shadow.
A lunar eclipse unfolds gradually. Look At The Stars helps you explore where it is visible, check stage times for your observing place, and make a plan for watching the Moon change.

A SIMPLE WAY TO BEGIN
Plan your view of a lunar eclipse.
Explore an eclipse
Start with an event and look at its visibility map. Compare the broad view of where it can be seen with the place where you want to observe.
Check the local stages
Follow the eclipse stages and their local times. This helps you decide when to be ready and which parts of the event you want to watch.
Choose your observing spot
Use visibility information to help choose a place. Check that the Moon will have a clear view above your local horizon, then review the weather before going out.
THE SAME ECLIPSE. YOUR VIEW OF IT.
Start with where.
Then look at when.
A visibility map gives the event a geographic context. Local stage times turn that overview into a plan for your observing place. Together, they help you compare a possible destination with the time you can spend watching.
The app brings visibility maps and stage timing into the lunar eclipse view, alongside Moon-phase exploration. You can prepare for the event and follow its changing appearance with a clearer idea of what you are looking at.
Visibility information is one part of the plan. A clear local horizon and suitable weather still matter when you are outside.
WHAT YOU ARE WATCHING
The Moon enters
Earth’s shadow.
During a lunar eclipse, Earth is between the Sun and Moon, and Earth’s shadow falls across the lunar surface. The Moon dims and can take on a reddish colour. The illustration on this page is a visual introduction to that changing appearance.
For the science behind the event, read NASA’s explanation of lunar eclipses.
You can also use Sky Calendar to explore other observing opportunities, or get to know the stars around the Moon with the My Sky star map.
